BBC Design Trainee scheme - open for applications


BBC Design Trainee Scheme Open 
The BBC’s prestigious Design Trainee Scheme is now open for applications.  
 
Established over ten years ago, the Scheme supports the development of design skills in costume, make-up, interactive design and the art department.
 
We’ve put together all four opportunities here, complete with the links you need to apply. All roles are offered on a twelve-months trainee contract.
 
Over the twelve months, you will work on a variety of programmes across a range of genres, so you can experience the ways different departments function. You’ll also be busy building a network of contacts.
 
The deadline for all applications is 11.59pm on 2 July.
 
 
Trainee Scheme: Art Department
 
Trainees will learn by practical experience on-the-job with professional training at the start of the contract, and appraisals throughout the year.
 
You will assist and support the art department team. Your role will vary according to production, and the day-to-day needs of the art department. Duties may include: construction/technical drawing, prop buying/making, photocopying and admin, graphics, set-dressing, research and model making.
 
You need to have an exciting and creative portfolio and be inspired by images on the screen. You should be able to produce technical drawings either by hand or computer and be happy to interpret and break-down a script. You must also be capable of working quickly and efficiently under pressure, and relish a challenge.
 
You should love working as part of a team and be able to deal with stress and difficult situations calmly and with tact. You should have an understanding of the art department and some awareness of continuity and set etiquette.
 
Note that the work can be physically demanding, as it involves long hours and some lifting/carrying props or heavy bags.
 
 
Costume Department
 
Costume is a key element of any film or television production, and this position offers experience in the costume department, working under the direction of the costume designer and supervisor.
 
Trainees will be assisting and supporting the team and the role will vary according to production, and the day-to-day needs of the costume department. Duties may include the set-up and maintenance of the wardrobe; laundry and costume maintenance; assisting with the purchase and hire of supplies and costumes; loading and unloading of kit and costumes between locations; administration tasks and continuity record filing. You will need to be able to carry out repairs and alterations and be confident in communicating with colleagues and actors.
 
You’ll need to have an exciting and creative portfolio to apply. You’ll be inspired by images on the screen, and be able to handle costumes confidently, and carry out small makes and repairs.
 
You should also be happy to do laundry and ironing and be able to interpret and break-down a script. You’ll need to be capable of working quickly and efficiently under pressure, and relish a challenge.
 
You love working as part of a team and are able to deal with stress and difficult situations calmly and with tact. You should have an understanding of the costume department and some awareness of continuity and set etiquette.
 
Note that the work can be physically demanding, as it involves long hours and some lifting/carrying heavy kit bags. You will be expected to have your own basic kit and be able to sew.
 
 
Trainee Scheme: Interactive Department
 
Trainees will work with the BBC’s award-winning UX&D team. You will be part of an innovative and supportive community of user experience designers, working with technical and editorial teams.
 
There are opportunities to be based in either London or Salford, with some travel or relocation expected as part of the scheme, according to production need.
 
If you enjoy meeting fascinating design challenges, with excellent design communication, then this might just be the scheme for you!
 
Your specialism could be layout, colour and typography or wireframes, user flows and personas. If you are an amazing prototype builder, illustrator or motion graphic designer, then the BBC wants to hear from you.
 
You need to know how to use Adobe Creative Suite products, but be happy to pick up whatever new package best suits the task at hand. The same goes for the new devices that your designs might appear on.
 
You'll need to have an outstanding portfolio to be considered for one of these roles.
 
 
Trainee Scheme: Make-up Department
 
Trainees will be assisting and supporting the make-up team and the role will vary according to production, and the day-to-day needs of the department. Duties may include: the set-up and maintenance of workstations; product stocktaking; assisting with the purchase of supplies; loading and unloading of make-up and hair kits between locations; general make-up administration tasks and continuity record filing.
 
You will need to be confident in communicating with colleagues and actors.
 
To apply, you’ll need to have an exciting and creative portfolio. You will be inspired by images on the screen, you must be able to apply make-up, affix small prosthetics and wigs/facial hair. You’ll be happy to cut men’s hair and be capable of interpreting and breaking-down a script.
 
You must be able to work quickly and efficiently under pressure, and relish a challenge. You love working as part of a team and are able to deal with stress and difficult situations calmly and with tact.
 
You’ll need to have an understanding of the hair and make-up department and some awareness of continuity and set etiquette. You'll also need to have an outstanding portfolio.
 
Hair and make-up trainees should be enthusiastic and willing to make a positive contribution to the team, and you will be expected to have your own basic kit.
