Royal Crown Derby - taking UK creativity to the world

Royal Crown Derby - taking UK creativity to the world

6pm, Thursday 31 March, Friar Gate Studios, Derby

Hugh Gibson, chief executive of fine bone china manufacturer, Royal Crown Derby, will be the guest speaker at a networking evening in Friar Gate Studios in Derby on Thursday 31st March.

Unlike other large china makers, Royal Crown Derby still designs and manufactures all its products in England, employing around 200 people at its head office and factory in Derby. Its tableware, giftware and collectables are handmade to the highest standards with individual pieces retailing from around £50 to over £1,000.

A passionate advocate of the arts, Hugh Gibson will talk about the importance of being based in England, in particular how it enables the company to work closely with and support local artists and creatives. Referring to work with celebrated ceramicists Ken Eastman and Peter Ting, Hugh will explain how the company nurtures creative ideas and takes innovative new products through design, production and on to sale in the UK and abroad.

He will talk about the development of some of the company’s latest ranges – including the Royal Wedding and Titanic memorial collections – which have received widespread publicity and are attracting new audiences to the Royal Crown Derby brand.

Finally, Hugh will talk a little about the history of the company which was founded in 1748, and how in 2000 he acquired it from the Royal Doulton Group bringing it back into independence and private ownership.

Anyone interested in business and the arts is welcome. If you would like to attend, please RSVP as soon as possible to fgs@friargatestudios.co.uk so we can cater correctly for drinks and snacks, which will be available at no cost.

The venue is Friar Gate Studios, Ford Street, Derby DE1 1EE. The evening will start at 6pm with Hugh Gibson speaking at 6.30pm for around 45 minutes including Q&A. Afterwards, guests will have the opportunity to continue networking until 8.30pm. This is the latest in a series of popular networking events put on by Friar Gate Studios to support creative businesses. Find our more at at http://www.friargatestudios.co.uk/events_diary.cfm

First Steps as a Freelancer: Contracts

“First Steps as a Freelancer” is written by Mair Perkins, a student of MDes Visual Communication (Animation) and the Students' Union part time graphic designer, who is taking her first steps into the world of work as a self employed creative. Here she shares her ups and downs and summarizes what she has learned so far to inspire other young creatives to take their first steps.

Many students report contracts are not covered as part of their creative courses. When I had my first few real paid freelance jobs, I was initially excited but then nervous about how to proceed on the business side of things. Contracts may seem scary. They’re out of our comfortable creative zone and into the murky depths of business and law. Don’t fret. Learning about contracts is far easier than any creative project’s research and development phase. Just think of contracts as a brief. Similar to the project briefs or module outlines your tutor’s give you.

In my experience clients rarely give you a clearly defined brief that covers all aspects of the project you’ll be doing. Remember most of your clients will be expert in business or marketing and will have had little to no art education experience. Talk with your client and figure out what they want from you then type it up into an agreement. Work on drafting the document together so you’re both happy. This will help avoid problems later by ensuring you both share the same expectations from the project.

I found the most common problem is defining when a project ends? For example a client may ask you to design a flyer. You give a cost for the project based on how much time and skill it will require from you. You think the flyer is done and meets all their requirements. But they keep coming back and asking for more changes. Or ask you to turn it into a poster, or do the design again but with some different text. They might say this is all part of the same project whilst you thought it was just the one flyer. If you gave them an estimated time and cost for the one flyer when you’ve ended up doing for more than you first estimated. It also means your finances and time for other projects will be affected.

By simply talking about what you want from each other and putting together a contract, this can be avoided. It will keep you and your client happy. A contract will help you look professional, well organized and an expert in your creative field.

Apply now not later

It has come to our attention that many final year students are not applying for graduate vacancies because they think that they are not officially a graduate until they attend their graduation ceremony and get the official certificate and the grand title of 'graduate'.
If you are a final year university student, and want a job for when you leave in the summer, don't wait, start applying now. You will probably be available to work by May/June and will be considered as a graduate as soon as you come to the end of your studies.
Start by looking at the graduate vacancies on our website now and get help with the whole process by attending the special sessions we are putting on for final year students.Click on latest vacancies and graduate destinations.
