Media Volunteer for Embrace Africa Ltd

Embrace Africa Ltd is a local not-for-profit organisation working through a partnership and collaboration agreement with the Kenyan Government.

Embrace Africa Ltd has been working closely with two Kenyan Government organisations, the Transition Authority and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission over the past year to develop an equality element to the National Capacity Building programme. This programme is designed to support the devolution of public service powers to 47 County Governments – similar to the systems in place in the United States.

To support the devolution process they have developed the National Equality Standard in collaboration with their partners. In very simple terms the NES guides organisations and individuals through key operational areas, helping them to understand the equality issues, undertaking gap analysis identifying current issues and potential future problems and developing solutions. The organisation’s users will have access to an information and training library. The NES will enable the consistent application of processes to organisations across Kenya to deliver objectively measurable equality and diversity outcomes.

Following a workshop in early February in Matlock, Kenyan partners agreed to the formal adoption of the NES by the Kenyan Government, and the objective of a roll-out to the new County structure administration in Kenya commencing later this year.

To facilitate awareness-raising of the National Equality Standard and initiate the roll out, workshops and a National Conference have been organised for April and June respectively in Kenya this year.

They are seeking a student to help develop a media presence for the National Equality Standard in Kenya and in East Africa, to coincide with the forthcoming events and to assist in writing information hand-outs, promotional material and press releases. They also need assistance in engaging with social media sites (e.g. Facebook and Twitter), regional sites and channels, and in authoring blogs to communicate the introduction of the NES in Kenya.
Your contribution will be publicly acknowledged both in the UK and in Kenya as supporting this important project for the Kenyan government. You would get the opportunity to work closely with the Directors of Embrace and to learn from them, and there may also be the opportunity for paid work as the project progresses.
