Visual arts commission for Derby Uni/Derby college students

Visual Art commissions - Derby: City of Invention

A window vinyl and empty shop hoarding project led by Derby city council’s Art in the City Team and Derby Museum & Art Gallery.

Image submission deadline: 6 June 2011 at 4pm

Derby: City of Invention. Invention is part of Derby’s DNA - past, present and future. For this project, invention describes activity across the arts, science, engineering, philosophy, astronomy, medicine, mathematics and IT. Image submissions are equally welcome from all these areas.

We are looking to commission 4 large digital artworks at £250 each. Plus 2 smaller digital artworks at £100 each, (these may be images of pre-existing work).

The final selection of between 7 – 12 striking images will form a visual and narrative trail across the city. The images will reflect the breadth of invention that exists within the city. Every window vinyl or shop hoarding will clearly illustrate HOW Derby is a City of Invention.

Each image will sit above the strap-line Derby: City of Invention. There must be a very clear correlation between the image and the strap-line. (The artist or company name and, if applicable, image title will also be printed by the image.)

Images of, or about invention could reflect historical achievements, a contemporary perspective or a future possibility. Images of items from the Derby Museum and Art Gallery collection will also form part of the series.

One image will be selected from submissions from Derby College students.

One image will be selected from submissions from University of Derby students.

Size

The large images may be used on shop or building site hoardings (approximately 150cm high x 250cm wide). The smaller images may be used on window vinyls (approximately 150cm high by 120cm wide).

Locations

The images will be sited on empty retail units and shop hoardings in areas which experience heavy footfall. We will target key pedestrian access routes into the city, the Cathedral Quarter and proposed St Peter’s Quarter.

Project launch

The project launch date 27 July - to coincide with the launch of the Wright of Derby Festival.

Fee

The fee includes permission for Derby city council and partners to reproduce the artist’s image for the projects’ on and off-line marketing, publicity and PR activities.
