As part of this year’s First Light Awards, we have teamed up with YouTube to give young people aged 18-25 the opportunity to win £1,000 towards future filmmaking projects.

We are asking for submissions of short films, 3 minutes or under, that could be described as ‘digitally innovative’.

The films will be judged by Peter Barron, Director of External Relations for Google and former Newsnight editor, and the 3 shortlisted filmmakers will be invited to attend the First Light Awards where the winner will be announced.

Building your personal brand from scratch: a guide for graduates
Personal branding has become a hot topic in the last couple of years, but it's easy to look at it superficially, either as an aspect of celebrity or as a function of how active you are in social media. But I believe personal brand is both more profound and more subtle than that.

I get asked all the time by students how they should approach it, mainly because they need to attract the attention of potential employers. I think there are some clear steps.

Understand that brand is a collection of shared associations and concepts: Nike, Apple, The Guardian: each of these brands has a small set of powerful meanings or concepts shared by their audiences. Think Apple, for example, and you think beautiful, cutting-edge consumer technology – and a little apple logo. Your personal brand is the same. The aim is to develop a set of meanings for yourself which are positive and strong. So your brand is not something that you can decide on the morning of an interview: it's not a mask that you can put on and take off. It's never too soon to start building those associations, and the best way start is to examine your core purpose.

Have a sense of purpose: Powerful brands know what they are trying to do, and so do their customers. Think about your purpose: what you want to achieve and why. It doesn't have to restrict you in the long term, but it will give you a clear focus and narrative in the short term. And if you have a clear sense of your purpose, it will not only be reassuring to employers, but also enable you to answer questions such as "What do you hope to be doing in five years?"

Pull together your career history – and future: Many people have diverse and sometimes conflicting educational and career histories, and there's no problem at all in that, providing that you can weave your experiences together to make a coherent career story. From all your experiences what did you learn, how did you change, how has it brought you to a clear sense of where you are now and where you are going? In the end, all successful branding is about story. Learn yours well so that you are comfortable telling it.

Richard Branson's story of market stallholder to record-label entrepreneur, combined with adventurer, challenger to major brands and shameless playboy contributes directly to his business success. Levi Roots has reinvented himself and made a successful business from his particular story of combining a passion for reggae music with Caribbean food.

Be clear about your 'brand positioning': Positioning is a relative concept, referring to the place that you occupy in the mind and heart of your audience, relative to other brands. What position do you want to occupy? "Simply the best" is not an appropriate answer. Fine artists talk about a "specific", which is a similar concept. What is your "specific"? It's not just something that you are good at but something that truly distinguishes you. The trick is to be very clear in your own mind about the combination of things that you offer and how they together make something compelling and distinctive.

Tell an irresistible story: Facts alone are dull, and lists of qualifications are just facts. To create a brand for yourself, you have to capture the imagination of your audience. Tell them something that makes them feel something (excitement, trust, confidence). Buried in almost every CV that I've seen, there is a story of an achievement, or a skill, or an approach, which has the potential to help an individual stand out from the crowd. I have just reviewed a CV of a graduate looking for a PR role, in which (buried deep in the bullet points) was the fact that she had real experience of handling crisis PR for McDonald's. It turned out there was a powerful story in that point which was not being told. Another recent encounter was with a young marketing professional whose previous employer had described her as the most reliable person they had ever met. That simple statement is a powerful foundation for a story of how the person can bring real value to an employer.

Resist the temptation to exaggerate or to invent: At all costs, resist. Great brands are founded on authenticity. You don't need to be anything other than you are: just to tell your story better. A classic example is to over-state levels of responsibility or of skill. But, depending on your personality type, it can also be tempting simply to add unnecessary swagger and false self-confidence, in the manner of a contestant in The Apprentice. Straightforward presentation of what you might call a modest self-assuredness is much more appealing.

Become not just irresistible but irreplaceable: The best way to build a brand reputation early on is by the way you act and the value that you add. Throw yourself into every opportunity to serve. Your enthusiasm and commitment to the organisation will be noticed and valued. When they are begging you to stay, you'll know you've started to really build your brand.

Déda|Producing is looking for emerging or established dance artists to take on the role of Local Dance Champion for one or more of the performances of Games Time in 2012 (Loughborough, Northampton and Derby). The local Dance Champions will be working alongside professional dancers from the Games Time national team as well as choreographer Gary Clarke and Artistic Director Lea Anderson.

Games Time is a large scale Community Celebration Event which aims to bring the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the East Midlands. It is funded by the Legacy Trust UK and Arts Council England. For more information visit www.gamestime.org.uk .

I’m working on the recruitment for Games Time, an outdoor spectacular theatre show that will be coming to Derby in September. It will be a spectacular, live, outdoor stage show combining music, video, fireworks, professional dancers and 160 members of the local community.

We think this is a challenge you can rise up to and take part in. Participating in Games Time ensure that you will be part of celebrations for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Being part of the Games Time show will be an exhilarating and rewarding experience – one that will enable you to significantly develop your CV. Games Time will also build your self-confidence, team skills, perseverance and strength. Through your involvement, you’ll gain work experience and understanding about how a professional, world-class show is staged.

You will work with professionals who are the top of the game: Lea Anderson, Walk The Plank and Mahogany. On Games Time, you’ll gain an understanding of how a major show is put together, and the different professional jobs within the artistic, operational and technical teams.

Games Time will be an adventurous and challenging new experience, and one that is close to home. You can sign up with your friends; this inter-generational opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 13.

It is free to take part: the professionally led workshops and costumes will all be provided.

Arts Council England’s open access funding scheme – workshop on 1 February 2012

This is a great opportunity to meet Sara Sanderson from Arts Council England and learn more about this funding scheme.

Arts Council England believes that great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves, and the world around us, in short, it makes life better. A grant for the arts is for time limited activities which help to deliver the Arts Council England mission, ‘Great art for everyone’.

Grants for the arts is a year round lottery fund for individual artists, arts organisations, museums, libraries and other organisations to deliver arts projects. The arts can be used to assist an organisation’s delivery on other agendas such as health and wellbeing urban regeneration, youth work etc.

Who can apply?

Grants to individuals – from £1,000 to £30,000
Grants to organisations – from £1,000 to £100,000. Arts organisations, museums, libraries, local authorities and other public organisations, partnerships, other voluntary/community groups whose normal activity is not related to the arts.

National Trust is seeking expressions of interest for a major contemporary

commission, for Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, which will result in a temporary sitespecific

work or art, design or architecture in August 2012. The intention is for an

artist, architect or designer with a strong track record, to realise a new way of

experiencing this incredible site for a period of four months, August to November

2012.

Kedleston Hall is a neo-classical mansion with Adam interiors, landscape gardens

and park. Playful Incident refers to both the word used by Adam to describe

interventions in the landscape, and the playful approach we are seeking.

We are making a brand new series of 'Show Me the Monet' for BBC Two, the first series transmitted earlier this year in May.

As before, our Hanging Committee of three art experts is looking for great art - painting, drawing, photography, prints, sculpture, textile art (as hangings not textile design or fashion) - to put into their prestigious exhibition in London where members of the public together with the great and the good of the art world can view and buy the work that is on display.

We are looking for both amateur and professional artists from across the nation to apply and it would be fantastic if you were able to let your network of artists know how to apply for the show, should they wish to.

Applications open during the week of Monday 12th December 2011 and will close when we have received 3,000 applications or on Sunday 8th January 2012 at midnight (whichever is sooner).

Déda Producing, in partnership with Derby City Council, Derby Festé, QUAD, and Derby LIVE, is looking to recruit volunteers to be part of the cast for Games Time.

Games Time is a spectacular live outdoor stage show combining music, video, fireworks, professional dancers and 160 members of the local community.

The event is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a lasting cultural legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK, and Arts Council England.

Designed and written to embrace the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Games Time made its debut to great acclaim in front of 10,000 spectators on the sea-front at Skegness in July.

It will be showing throughout the East Midlands in 2012, in Loughborough, Northampton and Derby.

Volunteers will be rehearsing in 2012 and will have the chance to work with professional dancers and choreographers, as well as seeing how a large outdoor show is put together.

We are looking for individuals and groups, aged 13 and over, from in and around Derby, Derbyshire and the surrounding area. You don’t need to be a dancer or a performer but we are looking for people who will commit to the rehearsal schedule and who want to make the most of this opportunity.

Interested individuals or groups need to contact Déda Producing by 10 February 2012. A series of taster sessions will be held in March 2012 where potential cast members can get a taste of what’s involved in taking part.

QUAD in Derby is issuing a final call-out to all filmmakers and photographers based in the East and West Midlands to be part of a major cross region exhibition in 2012. The exhibition, entitled East Meets West, will be part of a programme of ‘off-year’ events for FORMAT International Photography Festival and will be on display at QUAD in Derby from March to May 2012 and Wolverhampton Light House from June to August 2012.

East Meets West is offering a chance for submissions from artists within the region and additional opportunities to support local talent. Selected artists will be invited to exhibit at QUAD, Derby and Light House, Wolverhampton or to take part in critiques and review sessions with film and photography industry experts. Filmmakers will also have the opportunity to have their work screened before feature films at QUAD.

Submissions are welcome from photographers and filmmakers of any age and background who are currently based in the East or West Midlands.

Submissions should be existing photographic works and short films that can broadly relate to the theme of Heroes. This could be as straightforward as depicting the super heroics of costumed heroes or documenting simple or unnoticed acts of heroism that occur every day. Alternatively, they could explore the darker facets of this theme, focusing on the sinister acts of an anti hero or villain. East Meets West is also open to emerging artists who have recently graduated from a Midlands University during the past two years.

Derbyshire Poet Laureate Matt Black launched the Literature Festival 2012’s Nonsense Prose & Poetry Writing Competition on National Poetry Day at his launch event at Alfreton.

Deadline: April Fools' Day 2012

To celebrate Edward Lear's bicentenary in 2012 we're asking you to have a go at writing your own nonsense poem or flash fiction story. Matt Black, Derbyshire Poet Laureate will be judging the competition and he has written a few handy tips on how to write nonsense to get you started.

The winners from each age category will be invited to perform their piece at An Evening of Nonsense with Matt Black which will be taking place during the Literature Festival.

We're already planning the Festival which will take place from Friday 11 May to Sunday 20 May 2012.

Calling all performers to take part in a media stunt in Derby City Centre as part of Oxfam’s GROW campaign

Calling all performers – whether you are an actor, an entertainer, are involved in amateur dramatics or you can simply ‘role-play’, Oxfam Midlands needs you to take part in a Media Stunt in Derby City Centre!

The stunt will be taking place on Tuesday September 27th and will be a mock ‘land grab’ to highlight this practice. A land grab is effectively where corporate organisations (with the agreement of national governments) buy up plots of land in developing countries. These plots of land however are being used by local communities for their livelihoods and to simply survive. The land is often ‘grabbed’ for commercial use and forces people away from the land they have cultivated.

To highlight this practice, which is part of Oxfam’s GROW campaign, we are carrying out a mock land grab in Derby and need your help to attract the public and the media. Our plan is to ‘take over Derby’ to highlight the issue in full abundance, which is where your creative skills can help us out!

We are aiming to emphasize the whole practice of ‘land grabbing’. We will have an area to display ‘land grab trading’ which will include imitating key people like estate agents, bankers and other financial companies, etc. who will be trying to buy land used by local people. In another area, we will also present a visual display of ‘a mock up plot of land’ with key people involved in taking over the land e.g. bankers, construction workers, government officials, alongside the very vulnerable local people who had previously used the land for their livelihood, as well as to simply survive. We also think it would be a good idea to include a ‘tug-of-war’ to highlight the ‘fight’ for land on both sides.

To pull this all together we need people to get involved to add drama and realism to the media stunt. We have various roles available ranging from playing bankers, estate agents, government officials, to local inhabitants fighting for their land and to ‘market traders’ and ‘sign holders’ to direct people to the activity.

We have a lot of ideas but appreciate any alternative suggestions, as you are the experts! In effect we plan to ‘take over’ Derby for the day to make the public aware of the importance to stop ‘land-grabs’ and to generate media coverage.

· CV development and committing it to memory so you can use examples in response to questions.

· Remembering the W’s; Who you are interviewing for? Why do you want the job? What can you bring? And Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?

· Impact and appearance; first impressions are crucial.

· Body language do’s and don’ts; your handshake, eye contact and enthusiasm.

· Interview etiquette and the art of conversation; knowing when to speak and when to stop!

QUAD has initially taken in graduates and local unemployed people from various backgrounds to meet for the morning sessions, but as there is high demand QUAD are pleased to announce an additional afternoon session (1.30pm-4.30pm) for up to another 15 local, unemployed people aged 18+.

Chesterfield Borough Council is launching a volunteer scheme in Tourism and Cultural Services. There will shortly be opportunities for a variety of volunteering activities within the Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield Museum, Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre and to assist with Arts Events within the Borough. The range of activity and experience will become broader as the scheme gets going over the coming summer and autumn. The final result will be a book and exhibition to showcase the wealth of fashion talent based in Derby and the East Midlands. Imagine an Italian Vogue style fashion shoot and you will get the idea!

The first part of the process is to see who might be interested in joining the project. We will need models, make-up artists, hair stylists, stylists, local fashion designers to begin with. So if you are at all interested then do let us know!

QUAD Shorts 2 – film commissions

Aspiring filmmakers once again have a chance to see their ideas up on the Silver Screen as QUAD in Derby announces the launch of QUAD Shorts 2.

QUAD Shorts commission will fund up to five pieces of film or moving image by artists and film makers from Derby, Derbyshire and the East Midlands. Proposals are open for films three to five minutes in length with the theme of ‘Heroes’ inspired by 2012 Olympics. Each selected commission will receive a maximum production budget of up to £5000 and the completed films will be shown in QUAD as part of ‘ID Fest’ film festival in May 2012. As part of the commission, successful applicants will also receive support for Script Development, Project Mentoring and a professional Producer for each film.

Screenwriting Basics – training course

Those interested in furthering their film making skills in time to apply for the commission can make use of two courses running in QUAD in the autumn. Screenwriting Basics is an introductory eight-week course for scriptwriters, delivered by award winning scriptwriter Graham Lester George. Covering the basic elements of writing a script, including; structure, character and plot, the course will develop skills needed to analyse and develop a critical approach to scriptwriting. The course runs for eight weeks from 5th October until 30th November, on Wednesdays from 6:00pm until 8:30pm. The cost is £150, or £120 for concessions.

A course in Short Film Direction, run by experienced film maker James Sharpe will provide the key skills, tools and advice to advance in independent film making. You learn how best to implement affordable film making equipment to create better short films. Please note the outcome of course is not to create a short film but to learn the practical skills and theory in order to do so. The course runs for six weeks from 8th November until 6th December, on Tuesdays from 6:00pm until 8:30pm. The cost is £160, or £128 for concessions.

The Bond is a busy mixed use conference, office and business with a variety of tenants and facilities including dance studio, arts and media organisations and a range of charities and voluntary bodies in Birmingham’s creative Eastside quarter.

The Bond Company wishes to appoint an Artist in Residence for a period of 12 months to develop their work and/or explore the canal side surroundings through their art form. A flat and studio will be provided free in exchange for residential caretaking and other site duties. In addition there is the possibility of up to 20 hours a week hourly paid work. Each artist will be required to take one photo a week, for 4 weeks.

The photo will be of a sculpture that will be taken to various locations around the county.

We are looking for individual perspectives on our basic idea which we hope will make this project interesting and thought provoking

The final 53 photographs will be shown, in A1 format, at a gallery in London, and with luck shown in other local venues too. The images will also be published in a book for the exhibitions.

Whether you’re something of a poetry novice - or you already spend your life scribbling in notebooks while walking amongst daffodils! – You’re welcome to come along and enjoy creating, discussing and sharing poetry at this friendly workshop. We will learn more about the poetry world, read and discuss poems by living poets, and consider what poetry is and how it works. We’ll write together using a variety of stimuli and talk about the poetic process and about editing your work. We’ll support each other in sharing the poems we write and talk about how we might move forward with our poetry.

Cathy Grindrod is the author of five poetry collections, most recently The Sky, Head On, published by Shoestring. She is a former Derbyshire Poet Laureate, widely published and broadcast and has recently written her first play, Always in the Afternoon, a script in hand performance of which will be staged at Derby Studio Theatre in September 2011. She has also written, in collaboration with composer James Redwood, the libretto to the oratorio, More Glass than Wall, nominated for a BBC Radio 3 British Composer of the Year Award. Cathy works as a literature consultant, tutor and mentor.

Daunted at the thought of writing a novel? Plagued by uncertainty? Does completing a full-length work just feel too hard? Even for people with lots of experience, sometimes the distance between the first words of a novel and the completed manuscript can appear too enormous to contemplate.

Martin Davies' Novel-Writing Booster Kit is designed to help. Aimed at people hoping to complete a longer work of fiction, the workshop will help you overcome some of the challenges in your path.

Perhaps you have already embarked on a novel or simply have an idea you want to develop – or perhaps you just need some encouragement to help you on your journey. Martin’s one-day workshop will address the obstacles you face – from storytelling and structure, to exhaustion and self doubt. Martin will also take a little time to look at what to do when your manuscript is finally complete! This one day workshop is an ideal follow on from the Novel-Writing Starter Kit course but it also works as a standalone workshop.

Martin’s workshops are fast-paced, fun and highly interactive, and there'll be plenty of time for questions throughout the day.

Martin Davies is the author of four novels, and his books have been published in the US and Europe as well as in the UK. One day writing workshop

Where do ideas come from? What makes a story a satisfying read? Using lateral-thinking techniques, memory and images we will spark ideas for new stories and provide tools that can be used again and again to boost creativity. Then, by looking at examples of the genre, we will identify the elements of short story structure and learn how to use them in developing and tightening our stories. Suitable for all levels of writing experience, the workshop will encourage experimentation and shared feedback in a supportive environment.

Judith Allnatt is an acclaimed short story writer and novelist. Her latest novel, The Poet’s Wife, has been shortlisted for the East Midlands Book Award. It tells the story of the poet John Clare and his wife Patty Turner: a story of poems and passion, genius and madness. Judith’s first novel, A Mile of River, was selected as Simon Mayo’s Book of the Month on Radio 5 Live and was shortlisted for the Portico Prize for Literature. Short stories have featured in the Bridport Prize Anthology, the Commonwealth Short Story Awards 2009, and on BBC Radio 4. Judith lectures on creative writing for various universities and is currently working on her third novel.

Bestselling author Steven Dunne http://www.the-reaper.com/ will talk about self-publishing followed by a question and answer session. Covering the advantages of self-publishing and traditional routes to publication, Steven will talk about finance, finding the right publisher and the design of your product. He will also cover retail and promotion.

Steven Dunne graduated from Kent University in 1979 and did a variety of jobs in London, including Public Relations Consultant, freelance Journalist and supply teacher. He taught English for eight years in Croydon and moved to Derby in 1996. In 2007, he self-published Reaper, about a serial killer who strikes in Derby. It sold over 1000 copies in the East Midlands and in 2008, Harper Collins bought the rights and The Reaper was released nationally in 2009. A sequel, The Disciple, was released in August 2010. Steven has since signed a publishing deal at Headline to release his next DI Brook novel Deity, which is scheduled for release in 2012.

Derbyshire County Council is looking to appoint the next Derbyshire Poet Laureate.

The appointment is for two years, running from October 2011 to September 2013, and the brief will include a set of commissions, workshops and events. It is also expected that the poet will use the honorary title to seek further commissions, workshops and appearances during their tenure. The Laureate will be featured as part of the 2012 Derbyshire Literature Festival, and given a skills development bursary.

The Derbyshire Poet Laureate not only needs to be an excellent poet, but will also need to demonstrate an aptitude for working and performing in a wide variety of community settings.

Applications are welcome from poets living, working or studying in Derbyshire.

Nottingham City Council needs your bright ideas! We are looking for engaging artworks in any form. The Nottingham Light Night event, now in its 5th year, is a special night of performances, parades, installations, projections, tours, talks and special offers that transform the city centre into a great night out for young and old.

Commission Fees

Working in partnership with QUAD Derby based business Actcess will deliver a four day workshop for D/deaf adults based in Derby. This course will be delivered in BSL at the QUADs Digital Studio.

The course will introduce participants to film production, Participants will produce a short film

You will be shown how to:

• Produce storyboards
• Look at imagery and scripts
• Film interviews and record sound
• Use video production hardware and software (High Definition, broadcast quality, professional independent film production kit and editing software)
• Film and edit footage using Final Cut Pro (practical)
• Produce a final edited version of a 3 minute film

The course will enable participants to develop their own creative ideas. The participants will also be shown how to use QUAD's technical equipment so that they can do all the filming and editing themselves.

IdeasTap, the online arts and funding organisation, has teamed up with Sky Arts to launch a new bursary for young artists. The Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund will offer five young artists £30,000 each to fund their work for a full year.

The fund is open to artists aged 18-30 living in the UK and Ireland, and is designed to bridge the gap between formal education and becoming a working artist.

The Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund is open to individual artists working in visual art, theatre, performance art, film, music, dance or literature. The scheme will also provide each artist with a mentor from Sky, who will help develop their skills and knowledge in the arts and commercial sector. The artists will also have the opportunity to showcase their work on Sky Arts – be it on TV, online or on demand.

The deadline for applicants is 19 September 2011. Two winners will be selected during this round of funding. The next round will open in early 2012 from which three further winners will be chosen.

Chesterfield Green Fair Papergirl Project: Call for artists (deadline 24-8-11)
The Chesterfield Green Fair will take place in Chesterfield town centre on Saturday 24th September 2011.

As part of the project they are planning 'The Papergirl Project'. This was started in Berlin a few years ago.

Local artists are asked to donate any artwork that can be rolled up. One week before the Green Fair all the artwork will be collated, rolled up and made up into bundles tied with ribbon. The bundles of rolled up art will then be distributed to unsuspecting members of the public by a group of women cycling around Chesterfield.

One copy of each artwork will be set up in a gallery in the town centre which will be open on the Green fair day.

One piece of artwork will be an A4 print promoting the Green Fair.

Artists are invited to donate any number of copies of artwork (at least 5) for distribution. There will be a dedicated web page with details of all contributing artists.

Contributing artists will be asked to provide a small description of themselves and their work and a digital version of their artwork.

All artwork will need to be delivered by August 24th.

Wirksworth is home to Wirksworth Festival, which over the past two years has concentrated on developing its contemporary visual arts programme, and aspires to become a leading rural Festival of contemporary art in the UK, something we are increasingly being recognised as:

We are interested in work that critically interrogates the situation that is Wirksworth: ‘situation’, a set of conditions in time and place - a convergence of site, non-site, place, non-place, locality, public space, context and time.

We are interested in psychogeography, Situationist strategies, the dérive, in destabilising preconceptions of site and meaning, in intervention, in discovery, surprise, awe and humour, in cartography, maps and charts, in interactivity, and in friction rather than rapprochement.

The callout is to artists and studio groups for our Windows programme. A fee of £1000 is available for creating work which will animate the town during the festival by making work responding to the festival's concerns to be shown in around 10 shop windows. Interested groups should send their brief proposal, an outline of how they would approach the project, and details of artists who might participate, by Monday 11 July to info@davidgilbert.org.uk.

'Made in the Middle' is the Midland’s principal open selling exhibition of contemporary craft which takes place every three years. It promotes the best of craft from makers with a regional connection and it is popular with audiences, galleries and collectors. Besides achieving an excellent level of sales, many makers gain from further commissions and exhibiting opportunities. The exhibition will launch at mac birmingham on 21st January 2012 and will tour for approximately eighteen months. Made in the Middle will launch in the East Midlands at The Hub: National Centre for Craft & Design.

This is the seventh exhibition in the ongoing Made in the Middle series, originated by Craftspace. This year for the first time, East meets West as the exhibition will also feature work from makers based in or affiliated to the East Midlands, to reflect the skill and work available within the whole region.

Makers currently working in the East or West Midlands
Makers with connections to the region through education, teaching or past practice
The exhibition will launch at mac in January 2012 and will then tour for 18 months.
